The API 6A specification (ISO 10423) is the standard recognized in the oil industry that applies to wellheads (Wellhead) and trees (Christmas Tree) which was created to provide a safe, dimensional and functionally interchangeable medium.
It includes detailed requirements for the manufacture of equipment for the suspension of tubular, valves and connectors used in the locations of oil and gas wells which contain and control the pressure and fluid flow. It also serves as a reference source for the design of flanged connections.
Pipe flanges according to ASME / ANSI B16.5 or ASME / ANSI B16.47 standards are usually made from forged machined faces. They are classified according to their "pressure class" (a ratio from which a curve can be obtained according to the resistance to the joint pressure-temperature effect). Pressure classes are expressed in pounds per square inch (abbreviated as psi or simply the symbol #).
The most common pressure classes are: 150 #, 300 #, 600 #, 900 #, 1500 # and 2500 #, although ASME B16.47 recognizes class 75 # which is designed for low demand working temperatures and pressures.
The higher the pressure class of the flanges of a pipe network, the greater the resistance will be presented to the joint effect of pressure and temperature. Thus, for example, a system with class 150 # would hardly withstand pressure and temperature conditions of 30 bar and 150 ° C, while a class 300 # would be ideal for those conditions. The higher the pipe class of a flange, the higher its price, so it would be an unjustified expense to use 600 # flanges for this particular case.
There are also flanges under the European DIN Standard, which use the designation PN (Nominal Pressure). In this way they are classified as PN6, PN10, PN16, PN25, PN40, PN100, PN250, PN400 BARS. Sometimes the letters "ND" of the German "NENNDRUCK" are still used instead of PN.
